Welcome back to the Wednesday Writing Prompt Project! I'm excited to bring you the third and final set of writing prompts for 2024! These exercises are designed to inspire your creativity and help you overcome writer's block! I hope these prompts have been a fun and helpful way to practice your writing and maybe help spark a few new ideas for you this year, and I'm looking forward to continuing in 2025!

Writing Prompt Guidelines

⏱️ TIME COMMITMENT: ≤30 minutes 

• First, set a timer for 10-15 minutes and jot down ideas or brainstorm.

• Then, write based on the prompt for another 15-20 minutes. You can continue writing or editing your work, but only after the second 15-20-minute timer goes off.

• Remember, the goal of this activity isn't perfection! Writing prompts can help you get unstuck if you're in a rut or the ideas aren't flowing. But even if you're not experiencing writer's block, writing prompts can give you a fresh perspective or a new approach to your work.

An Unexpected Delivery

Your current WIP protagonist is taken aback when they receive a mysterious package in the mail. They are filled with curiosity about its contents and are eager to find out who the sender could be! Write a short story exploring the contents of the package and its significance to the protagonist’s life, or how it may impact your current work in progress.

Behind the Tapestry

Alice, a young artist struggling with a creative block, stumbles upon a frayed tapestry in her apartment that hides a mysterious secret. Intrigued by the unknown, she pushes aside the tapestry, revealing a concealed door leading into a dimly lit, bricked passageway. A faint, musty scent fills the air as she cautiously steps inside, her curiosity piqued by the mystery beyond. Where does this passageway lead, and what mysteries await on the other side?

The Ghost's Request

One eerie, moonlit night, as a group of teenagers wanders through an abandoned mansion, they are startled by the sudden appearance of a ghostly figure. The ghost’s translucent form materializes out of thin air and, with a haunting whisper, cries out for help. The ghost seems disoriented and confused but has a deep sadness about them, a yearning to rest in peace. As the teens learn more about the ghost’s past and why they cannot move on, they realize this request is not as simple as it seems.

The Worst Date Ever

After a string of unsuccessful online dating experiences, Dinah reluctantly agrees to allow her best friend to set her up on a date. As she nervously waits at downtown’s newest date night spot—Amore’s, an Italian restaurant—she spots Roger, her blind date, approaching her table with a big smile. However, the date quickly spirals into disaster as soon as they start talking. From spilling drinks to mixing up their orders and even accidentally knocking over a lit candle, the night quickly becomes a comedy of errors. Write a scene where Dinah and Roger try to salvage the night despite the chaos.

The Cursed Costume

A notorious procrastinator, Tommy Thompson rushes into a thrift store for a last-minute Halloween party costume. He’s drawn to an old, dusty pirate costume with a weathered leather jacket, a tricorn hat, and a sword that feels strangely heavy for a prop. In a cryptic tone, the store’s owner warns him to “be careful wearing it for too long,” but he brushes it off.

At first, everything seems fine, but soon, Tommy feels strange. His reflection in the mirror changes—his face grows pale and sunken, and his skin appears weather-beaten. His friends think it’s just a cool special effect, but Tommy knows something is wrong. Terrifyingly, Tommy’s thoughts grow darker, his memories begin to fade, and he starts to lose control of his own actions.

Desperate for answers, Tommy seeks out the owner, who reveals that the costume once belonged to a real pirate captain, cursed to live eternally through anyone who wears his clothes. The only way to reverse the curse is to locate the pirate’s lost treasure and return it to its rightful place before sunrise.

Racing against the clock, Tommy must gather clues and dive into local legends to find the treasure. Can he break the curse before it’s too late, or will he lose himself to the pirate’s dark soul?

The Black Cat's Warning

In the days leading up to Halloween, Sarah Santiago notices a sleek black cat following her everywhere she goes—on her morning jog, to work, even appearing outside her window at night. At first, she thinks the cat is just a harmless stray. But as the days pass, the cat’s behavior becomes increasingly unsettling. It appears at odd moments—outside her front door when she returns from work, sitting on her car hood, and even sneaking into her home.

One night, Sarah has a vivid dream in which the cat speaks to her, warning her of a terrible event that will happen on Halloween night if she doesn’t take action. The cat’s cryptic messages become more frequent and alarming, making Sarah question her sanity. Its eerie green eyes seem to follow her every move, and she hears faint whispers when it’s nearby.

The warnings become more specific: “Don’t go to the party,” “Beware the stranger in the mask,” and “Time is running out.” Sarah initially ignores these warnings as just her imagination, but then strange things start happening—near misses with cars, flickering lights in her apartment, and unsettling interactions with people she thought she knew. The cat’s presence becomes a constant reminder of some unknown danger ahead.

Sarah must decide whether to listen or brush off the cat’s warnings as mere superstition. What is the danger the cat is trying to warn her about, and can she stop it before it’s too late?

The Candy That Bites Back

After a long night of trick-or-treating, Billy Butcherson dumps his candy haul on the floor, eagerly sorting through his treats. Among the chocolates and lollipops, one piece stands out—a strange candy wrapped in a shimmering, glowing wrapper. No one else seems to have one like it. Intrigued, Billy bites into it.

Immediately, a surge of energy rushes through him. His senses sharpen, and he gains incredible powers—super strength, enhanced speed, and the ability to move objects with his mind. At first, it’s thrilling, and Billy feels unstoppable, finally able to do things he’d only imagined.

But as the days go by, Billy starts to notice unsettling changes. He begins blacking out, his temper flares uncontrollably, and a strange hunger gnaws at him. Mysterious glowing marks appear on his skin, mirroring the candy’s wrapper. Realizing something’s wrong, Billy digs deeper into the origins of the candy and discovers it’s cursed. Each use of his powers strengthens an evil force within him.

With time running out, Billy must find a way to break the curse before the darkness takes over completely. Will he be able to reverse the magic, or is he destined to become what the cursed candy intended?

Secrets Beneath the Soil

For generations, Willow Creek’s pumpkin patch has always been the town’s pride. Every fall, vibrant orange pumpkins grow bigger and more beautiful than any in the region, and no one ever questions why.

But this year, Julie James uncovers something dark while working at the patch. Buried beneath the soil, she finds an ancient artifact with glowing, cryptic symbols. After touching it, Julie starts having nightmares and visions of the town’s past—where sacrifices were made for prosperity.

As she digs deeper, Julie learns the pumpkins thrive not on good soil but on a centuries-old curse. The town’s ancestors struck a secret deal with a supernatural force to ensure their success. Now, each perfect pumpkin comes with a sinister cost.

With Halloween approaching, Julie faces a choice: expose the truth and risk the town’s collapse or let the curse continue. Will she find a way to save Willow Creek before the evil resurfaces?

The Endless Road Through Maplewood Falls

On Halloween night, Derry Jenner is driving along an unfamiliar road when he stumbles upon a small, eerie town called Maplewood Falls that doesn’t seem to appear on any map or GPS. Intrigued, he decides to explore. The streets are oddly deserted, but the town feels frozen in time—vintage storefronts, old-fashioned streetlights flickering in the fog, and distant sounds of laughter. Yet something feels off: an unsettling energy in the air, a creeping sense of being watched.

As Derry wanders through the town, he notices strange details:

• Clocks that tick backward.

• Shadows that move without a source.

• Whispers echo from empty alleyways.

The further he ventures ahead, the more unnerving the experience becomes.

When Derry decides to leave, he finds himself driving in circles—every road leads him back into the town. Panic sets in as he realizes the town isn’t just strange—it’s a trap. Can he escape before he becomes a permanent part of the town’s chilling secret?

Facade of a Femme Fatale

Late one rainy night, a mysterious woman steps into P.I. Gordon Hammer’s smoky office, her silhouette framed by the flickering neon lights of the city beyond the glass. She claims her brother is missing and pleads for Hammer’s help, her story laced with vague details and nervous glances. While her voice held a tremulous urgency, her words felt like a carefully constructed façade as she pleaded with Hammer for help locating her missing brother.

However, as Hammer digs deeper, he uncovers half-truths and inconsistencies: her “missing” brother has ties to a dangerous underworld, and the woman herself seems entangled in his schemes. Is she a desperate sibling seeking aid or a clever actress playing her part in a darker game? What dark secrets is she hiding, and how deep is her connection to the case?

Sanctuary on a Silent Night

After a disastrous heist goes wrong, a notorious outlaw finds himself on the run, seeking refuge in a small town church on Christmas Eve. Bloodied and desperate, he encounters the town’s preacher, a kind yet resolute man who offers sanctuary, but only under one condition: the outlaw must confront his sins. As the night unfolds, their uneasy alliance is tested by the arrival of bounty hunters and the preacher’s unwavering faith. Will the outlaw find redemption, or will his past consume him?

Signed, Santa Claus

While sorting through old mail, Otis Parcel, a lonely postal worker, discovers an entire room of forgotten letters addressed to Santa Claus. On a whim, he begins answering the letters, delivering small gifts and heartfelt replies. Soon, mysterious and magical changes sweep through the town—acts of kindness, long-lost dreams coming true, and even a few Christmas miracles. However, when one letter hints at a deeply buried town secret, Otis must decide whether to uncover the truth.
