Looking for Halloween movies with just the right amount of fright? Discover 13 family-friendly favorites filled with witches, ghosts, monsters, and Halloween magic.

Happy Spooky Season, y'all!

Ā

Halloween is just around the corner, and goodness knows I’ve written plenty of Halloween-themed blog posts. While I love a good horror movie, sometimes the season calls for something a little more lighthearted. If you’re looking for family-friendly Halloween movies that strike the right balance of fun and fright, this list is for you!

Ā

This list celebrates 13 frightfully fun films, from beloved Halloween classics to animated adventures filled with witches, ghosts, and delightfully mischievous monsters. Each movie includes a quick synopsis, a few fun film facts, streaming links, and a rating on my very unofficial Scare’o’Meterā„¢ļø. (Because not every Halloween movie needs to be a nightmare!)

Ā

Whether you’re planning a family movie night, introducing younger viewers to the spooky side of cinema, or just looking for a Halloween movie that won’t keep you up all night, I’ve got you covered!

Ā

So, grab some popcorn, cozy up, and let’s get into the Halloween spirit!

— SCARE'O'METER —

Not every Halloween movie needs to leave you hiding under a blanket! To help you choose the right level of fright for movie night, I’ve rated each film on my unofficial Scare’o’Meter. Think of it as a guide to the spooky vibes, not a replacement for checking a movie’s official rating or deciding what’s right for you or your family.

Barely Spooky šŸŽƒ

These movies are full of Halloween fun, featuring playful ghosts, charming characters, and just a touch of spooky magic. They’re perfect for viewers who prefer their scares extra mild and their monsters more silly than sinister.

Slightly Spooky šŸŽƒ šŸŽƒ

Ready for a few more chills? These films feature creepier creatures, eerie settings, and suspenseful moments, yet they balance the scares with humor, adventure, or heart. Great for moviegoers who enjoy a little Halloween mischief with their thrills.

Spooky!

šŸŽƒ šŸŽƒ šŸŽƒ

For anyone who likes their Halloween adventures a little darker! Expect more intense peril, unsettling imagery, and genuinely creepy moments. These picks may be best for older kids, teens, and adults who are comfortable with a stronger dose of fright.

Of course, everyone has their own scare threshold, so use the Scare’o’Meter as a starting point, and check the film’s official rating and content before watching with younger viewers.

Ā

For a little extra fun during movie night, I’ve also createdĀ Halloween movie bingo cards that you can download at the end of this post. As you watch, keep an eye out for classic spooky sights and mark them off your card. See how many you can spot before the credits roll!

One of my personal favorites on this list, The Addams FamilyĀ is a delightfully macabre comedy that perfectly balances the bizarre with the hilarious. To replicate Morticia's iconic comic-book figure, Anjelica Huston wore a metal corset. She also needed daily gauze eye lifts, neck tucks, and fake nails. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she said, "Come afternoon, I could be prone to a really good headache from my various bondages, and because I couldn't lie down [in the corset] or rest, it was fairly exhausting."

This animated comedy brings Dracula and his monster friends to life in a delightfully goofy story full of laughs, lovable characters, and just the right amount of lighthearted fright. Additional Viewing: Frankenweenie (1984) | Tower of Terror (1997) | Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)

Did You Know?

Animating the cheesy horror movie Norman watches at the film's start was reportedly very difficult for the filmmakers to produce. Fantasy movie poster for The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018): two adults and a boy amid glowing clocks, pumpkins, magic, and a spooky house.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)

šŸŽƒ šŸŽƒ

Ten-year-old Lewis moves in with his oddball uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious "tick-tock" noise. He soon learns that Uncle Jonathan and his feisty neighbor, Mrs. Zimmerman, are powerful practitioners of the magic arts. When Lewis accidentally awakens the dead, the town's sleepy facade suddenly springs to life, revealing a secret and dangerous world of witches, warlocks, and deadly curses.

Screenwriter: Eric Kripke

Starring: Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, RenƩe Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic & Kyle MacLachlan

Where to Watch: Hulu

Fans of the book should put The House with a Clock in Its Walls at theĀ top of their watchlist. Jack Black and Cate Blanchett have lively chemistry that adds plenty of charm, while imaginative visuals and thoughtful design create a richly entertaining world. The movie’s fun, retro vibe makes it an inviting pick for a memorable night in. But be warned: with Eli Roth at the helm, the movie has some unexpectedly dark, intense moments that may be too much for younger viewers.

The Witches (2020) movie poster with Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Stanley Tucci on a red carpet in an ornate hall, Halloween promo

The Witches (2020)

šŸŽƒ šŸŽƒ

In late 1967, a young, orphaned boy moves in with his loving grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she whisks him to a seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world's Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Screenwriters: Robert Zemeckis, Kenya Barris & Guillermo del Toro

Starring: Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Jahzir Bruno, Stanley Tucci, Kristin Chenoweth & Chris Rock

Where to Watch: HBO Max

The WitchesĀ may be a divisive addition to this list, but it’s very Halloween-coded, so I had to include it. In the original 1990 film, Anjelica Huston's Grand High Witch scared the absolute pants off me as a kid; it’s more nightmare fuel than fantasy. The 2020 remake starring Anne Hathaway is truer to the book, and this version of The WitchesĀ is more fantastical and cartoonish than the 1990s version, making it a more family-friendly choice.

Additional Viewing: The Witches (1990) | Matilda (1996) | Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Did You Know?

Judge Doom from Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), one of Robert Zemeckis' earlier book-based films, influenced Anne Hathaway's Grand High Witch performance. She was also inspired by Chernabog, the nocturnal demon from the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment in Fantasia (1940), because she saw the film's evil creatures as more like demons whose disguises make them look more like traditional witches.
