Use these weekly writing prompts to stay inspired and boost your productivity!

Welcome back to my Wednesday Writing Prompt Project!

If you’re new here, I’ve been sharing weekly writing prompts on Instagram since May 2024. To make them easier to revisit, I’ve started collecting them here on the blog so other writers can find inspiration whenever creativity runs dry, all in one convenient spot!

Can you believe we’re already halfway through 2026? Over the past two months, these seven prompts have helped me stay creative, experiment with some new-to-me genres and themes, and keep my writing practice going, especially on the days when motivation is in short supply.

Whether you’re struggling with writer’s block, looking for a quick 30-minute creative writing exercise to strengthen your storytelling skills, or searching for inspiration for your next novel, short story, or screenplay project, these weekly writing prompts are designed to help you build a consistent writing habit while exploring new genres, characters, and ideas.

Ready to start writing? Let’s dive in!

How These Writing Prompts Work

Each prompt is designed to be completed in about 30 minutes, making them perfect for busy writers who want to maintain a consistent creative practice without feeling overwhelmed.

Total Time Commitment: 30 minutes

  1. 10-15 min: Brainstorm ideas based on the prompt.

  2. 15-20 min: Freewrite without overthinking—just create!

  3. No pressure! No editing, no second-guessing—just let the words flow.

Feeling stuck? Don’t worry about writing something “perfect.” The magic happens when you let go of expectations and just write. Even if the scene doesn’t fit your current project, it could spark an idea for something new!

What You’ll Find in This Collection

In this round-up, you’ll discover:

  • A mysterious flower crown hiding a secret note.

  • A portrait that looks unsettlingly familiar.

  • A message from a forgotten soldier.

  • A letter from the past.

  • A book that predicts the future.

  • A summer solstice time loop.

  • A hidden lake house filled with family secrets.

Whether you write fantasy, mystery, speculative fiction, literary fiction, or are looking for something completely different from your usual work, there's something here to spark your next story.

Creative Writing Prompts to Inspire Your Next Story

May’s Writing Prompts at a Glance

May's prompts explored hidden messages, forgotten histories, strange coincidences, and mysterious links through time. If you like stories with suspense, family secrets, and a bit of the supernatural, you'll enjoy this collection.

Floral poster with green daisy border and purple panel reading The Spring Festival Secret, plus check my profile for more details.
The Spring Festival Secret

During a local spring festival, your character is gifted a delicate, small woven flower crown, beautifully crafted and decorated with vibrant blooms and ribbons. To their surprise, they discover a hidden note tucked inside the crown, hinting at a secret. The message seems meant for someone else—or could it be for them?

Mini-Challenge: Build tension through the use of sensory details: the scent of crushed petals, the warmth of a crowded festival, the crinkle of paper tucked where it shouldn’t be. Let these details shape your character’s reaction.

Graphic poster with framed background reading Writing Prompt: The Doppelgänger Portrait, and check my profile for more details.
The Doppelgänger Portrait

While browsing through a thrift shop, your character comes across a portrait of someone who bears an uncanny resemblance to them—only much older. The image seems almost haunting, stirring a mix of curiosity and unease. Is this merely a coincidence, a warning, or perhaps something supernatural at play, suggesting a deeper connection or a glimpse into a possible future?

Mini-Challenge: Write a vivid, sensory-rich description of the portrait before your character recognizes its resemblance. Enhance the scene by emphasizing texture, color, age, and mood to build suspense.

Poster with beige background and blue text: Writing Prompt, The Unknown Soldier’s Message, and check my profile for more details.
The Unknown Soldier’s Message

While visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, your character feels an unexplainable pull toward the unknown World War I soldier. Why might they feel this connection, and what message might the soldier be trying to send across time—possibly a plea for remembrance, a call for peace, or a reminder of the cost of war?

Mini-Challenge: Describe the moment of “contact” using only sensory details: maybe your character feels a sudden chill, hears the cadence of disembodied footsteps, or senses the hush of the crowd or the weight of a memory. Let the atmosphere reveal the bond.

Writing prompt poster: The Forgotten Graduation Letter, with hands holding an envelope and @writer_allley_mlchelle.
The Forgotten Graduation Letter

While cleaning, your character discovers an unopened letter they wrote to their future self for a school project—except they don’t remember writing this version. What changed? Who were they at that time, and what might they be trying to forget?

Mini-Challenge: Write the moment your character breaks the seal without revealing the letter’s message yet. Use sound, texture, and emotion to build suspense before the letter is fully revealed.

My Favorite Prompt This Month

My favorite prompt this month was The Doppelgänger Portrait because I’ve always been equally fascinated by and freaked out by the idea of doubles and lookalikes (I think I can thank R.L. Stine for that). The image of discovering a portrait of someone who looks exactly like you, but decades older, immediately sparked dozens of story ideas. Is it a warning? A glimpse into the future? A long-lost relative? I feel like this prompt leaves enough room for mystery while giving writers a vivid image to build from.

June's Writing Prompts at a Glance

June's prompts leaned into summer mysteries, time-bending phenomena, and long-buried family secrets. These story starters are perfect for writers who enjoy atmospheric settings, speculative fiction, and character-driven discoveries.

Handwritten page background with bold title Notes in the Margins, Writing Prompt, and check my profile for more details.
Notes in the Margins

At a beachside café, your character finds a forgotten book hidden under a chair. Curious, they flip through its pages and notice handwritten notes scribbled in the margins. At first, the notes seem ordinary. Then they start describing events happening around them: conversations they haven't had yet, decisions they haven't made, and memories they haven't revisited in years. Who wrote these notes? How could they know so much? And why does the book seem determined to find its way into your character's hands?

Mini-Challenge: Try exploring dramatic irony by having margin notes reveal information before your character fully understands their meaning. Build tension through anticipation and curiosity.

Colorful writing prompt graphic reading The Summer Solstice Loop, with check my profile for more details and @writer_allley_michelle.
The Summer Solstice Loop

The summer solstice brings the longest day of the year. At first, your character enjoys the extra daylight, but as twilight nears, something feels off. The same hour repeats: a conversation happens twice, the same song plays, shadows fall in the same way. While others ignore it, your character realizes they’re trapped in a loop tied to the solstice. With each repetition, your character notices new details, and one question becomes undeniable: Why won’t the sun set?

Mini-Challenge: Use repetition with variation. Include one detail, a line of dialogue, a bird’s call, a passing stranger, etc., that appears in every loop but subtly changes each time. Let those differences reveal clues about what’s really happening.

Illustrated lakeside house with forest and dock; large text reads THE LAKE HOUSE KEY and check my profile for more details.
The Lake House Key

While sorting through a relative's belongings after their death, your character finds an old brass key with a faded tag bearing the name of a lake house they've never heard of. No one in the family has mentioned it. There are no photos, records, or explanations. Curious, your character decides to find the property.

Nestled along a quiet shoreline and hidden by overgrown trees, the lake house seems untouched. Inside, forgotten items, unfinished letters, and buried secrets suggest someone once planned to return but never did. As your character explores, they begin to question what they really knew about their family and the past.

Mini-Challenge: Treat your setting like another character. Let the lake house hint at the story through details like creaking floorboards, dusty furniture, old photographs, or the gentle water sounds at the dock. Let the setting help tell the story.

My Favorite Prompt This Month

My favorite prompt this month was The Lake House Key because I love a good mystery, but adding family secrets and an abandoned lake house made this prompt even juicier to me. Plus, I've been binge-watching episodes of Maine Cabin Masters lately, so that may have influenced me more than I'd like to admit. The idea of a simple key unlocking not just an abandoned property, but an entire hidden chapter of a family's history, really grabbed my attention. I also think the setting gives writers a chance to build suspense and emotional moments.

How to Use These Prompts Going Forward

Even if a new month starts, remember: these prompts don’t expire! You can:

  • Return to any prompt when you’re stuck.

  • Expand a favorite idea into a longer story.

  • Turn multiple prompts into a mini writing challenge.

  • Use them during writing sprints or timed exercises.

A steady writing practice grows from small, consistent moments. You’re building that one week at a time.

Writer’s Challenge

If you haven’t already, pick one prompt from May and one from June. Set a timer for 30 minutes and see how many words you can write. Once you're done, come back and share:

  1. Which prompt did you choose?

  2. How many words did you write?

  3. Whether you’d continue the story.

I'd love to hear about your experience in the comments!
