It's been a year since I made the pledge to watch 52 films by women, but I'm a little behind. Okay, kind of a lot behind...
I have tons of blog drafts saved of all the movies I've watched so far as a part of this project that I just have yet to release. But on top of that, I'm behind in watching films. Period. Finding time to research films by women and taking time to watch each one (I am NOT the kind of person who can multitask while watching a film - it has to have my full attention) has been harder to fit into my schedule that I anticipated. It's disappointing that I haven't been able to complete my goal of watching 52 films within a year, but I want to keep going and watch more films by women.
Supporting women creators whenever I can is important to me. Representation of women within the industry is not only necessary for current creators, but for the women and girls who will follow in their footsteps.
Fortuitously, September is Woman Director Awareness Month! Directed by Women is hosting a worldwide film viewing party and I am hoping this will help motivate me to get back on track. I plan to watch at least one film by a woman a week for the entire month of September and post about women directors on Instagram every day - wish me luck!
If you'd like to join me in supporting women filmmakers during Woman Director Awareness Month, you can visit directedbywomen.com and use the hashtags #WDAM2017 and #DirectedbyWomen. And if you'd also like to pledge to watch #52FilmsbyWomen you can visit womeninfilm.org.
